People find inspiration from many places, some unexpected. Elizabeth found her passion through coping with her illness, Epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a painful condition which causes the skin to easily blister and tear. She and her brother Tristan both suffer from EB, also known as the Butterfly Disease due to the fragility of their skin. Elizabeth loves to swim and spend time in the water, but because of her illness and high risk of infection, her time outdoors is limited. This is a congenital disease and something Elizabeth will have to deal with her entire life. Fortunately, she has found a way to do just that.
Answering the question, “If you could wish for anything, what would it be?” can be overwhelming. It wasn’t for Elizabeth. By watching sketching and speed painting videos on YouTube, Elizabeth developed her creative side, and from there grew her passion for drawing. So for her, the answer was easy…a specialized drawing tablet with monitor and gloves, and a ThinkPad Ultrabook.
To accomplish a very specific wish like Elizabeth’s, technical assistance was needed, so we enlisted the help of Saul Sandoval, an instructor at The Art Institute of San Antonio. With Saul’s help, we took Elizabeth’s wish list and pulled together everything she would need to enhance her artistry. On the day of her wish, Elizabeth was presented with her new Lenovo ThinkPad, Huion pen display tablet and monitor, artist glove for drawing, and video editing software. She was ready to create. For the next two hours, Saul helped Elizabeth get familiar with her new tools and software, as well as some great tips on sketching. During the training session, Saul gifted Elizabeth with some beautiful drawings that he had created of her.
Elizabeth’s mom, Esmeralda, told us how grateful she is for Elizabeth’s wish and said, “We are just amazed at how happy she is. She has been drawing non-stop and even has her siblings drawing with her!” She continued, “Elizabeth is so happy… we’re all happy.”
Elizabeth continues to bravely face her illness one day at a time. She and Tristan are participating in an experimental medical study of a cream called Zorblisa, which is giving children who suffer from EB a chance to not only heal their wounds, but have hope surviving their childhood. Esmeralda says that so far, it has helped ease some of the pain that both her kids deal with daily.
Make-A-Wish believes that wishes change the odds for kids fighting critical illnesses. We believe wishes help kids look past their limitations, inspire them, and help them envision a brighter future. Elizabeth solidifies this belief, as she tells us that her wish has given her hope as she looks to the future and a successful career as an artist.
