Mateo is a four-year old from Laredo who loves baseball.  After being diagnosed with a blood disorder (HLH) that required a bone marrow transplant, Mateo’s only wish was to watch the New York Yankees play ball in their home turf of the Bronx.  Mateo grew up in a house divided, with his dad being a Boston Red Sox fan while his mother was a New York Yankees fan.  Mateo ended up rooting for the New York Yankees and went on to play shortstop like his favorite player, Derek Jeter.

During his special wish trip in August of 2013, Mateo was able to spend quality time with his family while visiting other tourist attractions such as Central Park Zoo, Toys ‘R Us of Time Square and the Statue of Liberty.   On the day of his special wish, Mateo set foot in Yankee Stadium and was treated to a behind the scenes tour of the stadium and an afternoon of fun as he mingled with New York Yankees players as well as their rivals for the night.  Mateo was thrilled to be among these wonderful players and couldn’t stop smiling.

That night, Mateo’s wish came true and the New York Yankees sure did put on a show for him.  Mateo was able to witness Ichiro Suzuki’s 4000th career hit in the first inning and was able to cheer on his team to a 4-2 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.  “Mateo could not speak at first and was in shock.  He just kept smiling and I knew just by looking at him that he was having the time of his life.”  said Mateo’s mother.  “My husband and I are very grateful to Make-A-Wish, the Laredo Heat and the New York Yankees Organization for granting Mateo’s wish.  Mateo kept saying WOW over and over again and we can’t say THANK YOU enough for all you have done for our child.”
