Carter was born with a genetic disorder that affects the parts of the body which require the greatest amounts of energy. For Carter, it’s affecting his muscles, GI system, immune system, lungs, bladder and pancreas, causing low blood sugar and high ketones. His treatment is rigorous as he has to see a different doctor for each part of the body. It was one of these doctors that recommended Make-A-Wish.
“As parents, we want to do all we can to protect our children and take away their pain. It’s been a difficult journey watching what Carter has had to go through, but he is so brave and strong,” his mom Lee Ann said. To help explain to Carter his condition, Lee Ann bought him a children’s book which features a child who has the same condition and a service dog. Carter immediately fell in love with the idea of having his own dog…one that could detect when his blood sugar drops and provide comfort. At the wish discovery visit, Carter was so excited to tell his volunteers that he knew exactly what his wish would be…a service dog!
The family was thrilled with his choice to have this adorable sidekick. A companion to watch over him because “we don’t know what the future holds for Carter and this disease,” Lee Ann said.
“I never could have imagined being on the receiving end of a wish being granted. And let me tell you, it is incredible. The amazing things that Make-A-Wish does are only possible because of the tremendous efforts of the program administrators and staff, and most importantly, the generosity of supporters and donors. This wish is already having a tremendous impact on Carter and our family and for that I want to give a very heartfelt thank you on behalf of Carter, myself, and our entire family.”
The impact Lee Ann refers to is already taking place. Carter and his puppy Charlotte quickly created an unbreakable bond through playing, snuggling and lots of puppy kisses! Charlotte knows who her best friend is…she is dedicated to Carter and already provides so much comfort to him during difficult times due to his illness. Charlotte sleeps in his room and wants to be near him at all times. Carter tells us, “I just love her so much". Charlotte goes everywhere with Carter, and he says he can’t wait until he can take her to school!
